Yesterday, for the first time this year we actually lit the coal fire, it may have something to do with the fact that we are still waiting for our new boiler to be fitted (due next week) and we also had the chimney swept yesterday, thankfully the bird’s nest was removed BEFORE we lit it!
That is one of the signs that winter is on it’s way, the other one for me is that the children are now asking for warmer meals, no longer happy with a salad, they want ‘proper’ hot food!
I am of course very happy because it means I can get my lovely 6.5l Slow Cooker out of storage, as well as the 3l one for puddings.(although I did notice there is an even bigger one now available) There is nothing nicer than a huge bowl of steaming hot Stew and Dumplings or leaving the Sunday Roast to gently cook, whilst we are out for a walk in the woods.
Although one thing that I do need to purchase is a new Bread maker, I love making homemade bread, but mine was very old and I made the decision to say goodbye, I have been looking at the Panasonic Bread makers and they have a couple that will do the job nicely.
Another dish I may well have another go at is the Mushroom Bolognese, I think Viggo will LOVE it, and it goes perfect with warm crusty bread, so I guess a new bread maker will be required!
There is nothing nicer than the smell of freshly baked bread, and even my most fussiest of children will devour a loaf in seconds with lashings of butter (not particularly healthy, but you need the extra calories during the winter!)
Do you have a different menu during the winter months, what’s your favourite Winter food ?

Ahh! I would love a coal fire….I don’t think our landlord would agree though. lol
I love this time of year due to the food…So warming and hearty!
We love mince and dumplings and lots of soup x
I haven’t got a bread maker and it is on my ‘wishlist’.
