Understanding the Early Years Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or (EYFS), sets the standards for learning, development and care of your child from birth to five years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS. The EYFS framework is important in preparing children for later schooling.

During the Early Years Curriculum your child will be learning about the world and developing their literacy and maths skills, as well as expressing themselves through arts and crafts. The EYFS also focuses on developing communication skills and enhancing physical development.

At Taunton School, they aim to challenge their students through an extensive co-curricular programme. This means that they offer additional activities and subjects, that complement the EYFS.

These include opportunities in sport, the arts and other activities that help to develop key life skills.

There are many online resources and books where parents can learn more about the EYFS.

Schools and nurseries often provide parents with published information on the curriculum, to keep them engaged with their learning programme and allow them to follow along at home.

To help parents understand how they can support their child’s early learning stages at home, here are a few tips from Taunton School…

• Include your child in activities around the house as much as possible. They are all learning opportunities and can help to build up your child’s confidence and independence.

• Teach them about the outside world by exploring plants and wildlife.

• Practice nursery rhymes and the alphabet. These basics will help your child to improve their vocabulary and sentence structure.

• Read regularly and use books that encourage children to lift flaps and feel textures.

• Count everything! From steps to money, help to make maths fun.

• Enjoy crafting activities with your child and don’t be afraid to make a mess. This is a great way for children to express themselves and use all of their senses.

• Finally, always encourage your child to ask questions. This is the best way to learn!
