Natural Cleaning Tips that could change your life. If, like me, you feel as though you spend the majority of your life cleaning up after your kids (and husband!), you’ll often find yourself trying to find quick, efficient and less expensive ways to get the jobs done.
Recently, I decided to look into more ‘natural’ cleaning methods, as I’d read somewhere how detrimental cleaning products can be for your health and the environment. In fact, one study suggests that using spray cleaning products over a 20-year period was as bad for your lungs as smoking a pack of cigarettes every day!
So here’s what I found:
- Use Baking Soda to Clean Your Oven
Starting with what is, in my opinion, the worst job in the world, you can make your life easier by creating a paste of baking soda and water. Apply this to your oven, leave for several hours and watch as all the dirt and grime comes away as you wipe it down with a cloth. It may require a little more elbow grease but compared to the incredibly harsh chemicals you normally use, it’s got to be worth it.
- Change to Microfibre Cloths
Microfibre cloths and mops have revolutionised cleaning as, for everyday dirt, all you need is some water to get things clean. These cloths are designed to pick up all the dirt and dust around your home so are perfect for using to quickly clean up.
- Opt for Vinegar and Water Solutions for Everyday Cleaning
From dusting the coffee table to wiping down the kitchen sides, for all those jobs you turn to your spray cleaner for, try opting for vinegar instead. This helps disinfect the areas and doesn’t leave a vinegary smell behind once you’re done.
You could even have a go at creating a citrus-infused solution for an even cleaner feel. Just fill a jar with the peel of citrus fruits, pour white vinegar over them and leave for up to 2 weeks before straining out this handy all-purpose cleaner. Once diluted with water, it’s perfect for using on windows, floors and for disinfecting various surfaces around your home.
- Switch to Natural Air Fresheners
Finally, to mask those smells around your home, why not make your own natural air freshener?
Simmer some water in the bottom of a medium-sized pan before adding your natural ingredients. Some ideas include a slice of orange, a teaspoon of cinnamon and a couple of cloves and a dash of nutmeg. Or for a more romantic scent, why not try a dash of vanilla and a few sprigs of rosemary?
