If you work from home, it’s essential that you have a proper office space. If you’re just trying to work in the living room or the dining room, you’ll struggle to stay motivated properly and your work will suffer.
A lot of people use the spare bedroom in their house as an office space, but the only problem is, you then don’t have anywhere for guests to stay and that can be a problem.
If you have family that live out of town and they stay regularly, getting rid of the guest bedroom and turning it into an office isn’t really an option. But there is a simple solution; create an office space that doubles up as a guest bedroom instead. These are some of the easiest ways to do it.
Sofa Beds
The biggest problem that you have when trying to create an office space combined with a guest bedroom is the bed. You can’t really work effectively if you’ve got a double bed taking up the majority of the space, which is why a sofa bed is such a great idea.
When you’re using it as an office, you can sit on the sofa and relax for a few moments while you’re taking a break from work and when you’ve got guests over, you’ve got a bed that you can easily pull out. Just make sure that you invest a bit of money in a decent sofa bed because cheap futons aren’t very comfortable for your guests.
Multipurpose Furniture
Using multipurpose furniture is the only way to get everything that you need for both a guest room and an office space in there at the same time. You can get some great pieces of modern furniture that are very versatile and can be used for multiple things.
Stools that double up as a side table, for example, are great because you can sit on them if you like, use them as a small table next to the desk, or place them near the bed when you’ve got guests over.
When you’re putting a desk in, you should consider the placement and try to put it alongside the bed if possible. That way, you can use it as your desk for working but it can also serve as a bedside table for guests.
Speaking of multipurpose furniture, consider using a multipurpose gadget like a USB-C data and charging hub to organise your space better. By using a charging hub, you can get wires and cables out of the way and create more room on your desk or workspace for other stuff or for actual use. You can also avoid accidentally tripping on wires or unplugging a device you’re using.
Most rooms have limited power plugs. With the use of a charging hub, you can charge more devices at the same time. A multipurpose hub also provides more ports to connect peripheral devices to your computer and transfer data faster.
Add Plenty Of Storage
When guests come over to stay, you don’t want the room to look like an office with papers and things all over the place because it doesn’t create a very relaxing atmosphere. That’s why you need to make sure that all of the office stuff can easily be packed away, so you need good storage.
When you’re buying a desk, you should go for one with some drawers in and try to put some shelves and cabinets up above the desk. If possible, you should try to contain this storage to the desk area so the office is tucked away neatly in the corner and doesn’t eat into the rest of the room.
If you follow these simple rules, you can create a multipurpose room that acts as an office and comfortable guest room at the same time.
