Confidence gives us the strength to tackle life’s challenges, on both a personal and professional level. Without it, your child will struggle with things like performing presentations in class and they won’t feel optimistic when going into an exam. As a parent, you need to help instil confidence in your child from a young age, without crossing into arrogance territory. It’s a fine line, so how do we do it?
I have teamed up with an independent school in Kingston-Upon-Thames to help parents who want to develop their child’s confidence. Read on for some tips.
Praise your child, but not too much
When it comes to give your child praise, be careful not to overdo it because the meaning will be diluted, and your child won’t take it seriously. In other words, only praise your child when they’ve truly earned it. This will help them start to believe in their abilities and encourage them to work hard.
Let your child make their own decisions
It can be hard for parents to take a step back and let their children make their own decisions and ultimately make mistakes, but it is necessary for their growth. If they always have you to fall back on, they won’t build the confidence they need to form opinions, make choices or take risks.
Encourage your child to have goals
Teach your child the importance of having something to strive for and help them achieve those goals. A sense of achievement will help them feel good enough to try new things and take on challenges. It will allow them to feel as though anything is possible with a little hard work and determination.
Let your child know that you love them unconditionally
This may seem obvious, but it’s important for your child to understand that they will be loved and supported, even if they make mistakes or fail at certain things. They need to know that if something doesn’t go to plan it’s not the end of the world, and they will always have the love of family and friends to fall back on. This will give them the confidence to take chances.
If you’re truly concerned that your child is lacking confidence to a detrimental degree, you shouldn’t be afraid to contact the teachers at their public or private school for some further advice and guidance.
