Keeping your home running like clockwork is definitely more complicated than you would imagine. It is really quite easy for routines to fall apart, and for life to throw you a curveball when you are least expecting it. It only takes one small thing for the whole house to fall into chaos. Here, we share some foolproof tips to help you keep your home running like clockwork.
Organise yourself
Once you have got yourself organised it is much easier to stay organised. Making sure everything has its place is a foolproof way to keep things neat and tidy, which always makes life easier.
Try creating a daily or weekly schedule, and have it on display somewhere that everyone passes by regularly. You can easily print one from somewhere like Pinterest or make your own with a chalkboard and chalk pens.
Mark on there everything that needs to be remembered – when you need to go grocery shopping, school events, appointments when bills need to be paid and so on.
Keep contacts in easy reach
When something goes wrong, the last thing you want to be doing is digging through cupboards and drawers trying to find the number of a company to come and help you. For example, if you have a dishwasher, find a company who can supply you with these dishwasher parts and keep their contact details safe and sound. The same goes for a reliable plumber, electrician and mechanic – all services you may need quickly!
Declutter regularly
Clutter can often go hand in hand with chaos, and if you want your home to run like clockwork, chaos is not what you want. Start off by ‘bootcamping’ your home – go round the house, room by room, and get rid of anything you no longer need, use or want. If you are struggling with the process, apply the Marie Kondo method to it. Hire a skip to get rid of the trash, and take anything that can be used by someone else to the charity shop, or list on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, where you might even recuperate some money.
Once you have had a good clear out, keep on top of it. Once a month go round each room and do the same. Get rid of any toys that have missing parts or are broken, Any clothes that are too tatty to wear, or no longer fit – get rid. It will be much easier to do if you do it regularly and stay on top of it.
Make sure everyone is pulling their weight
All too often, housework and life admin falls onto one person, and that is not fair. Get your kids and your spouse involved in cleaning, making arrangements and all of the other aspects of running a home. Sometimes it takes a while to get into the routine and for everyone to understand what needs doing, but eventually, it should come as second nature to everyone.
Running a home like clockwork is much easier than it sounds. The trick is to get organised and stay organised.
